SOMNIA-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
1. Dreams are how Sleep chooses you. What might draw your character into Somnia— a wound, a wish, a weakness? Would they follow the dream, or run from it?
Vander is a character of great tragedy, a hero who has fallen from grace, killed and then turned into the epitome of what he feared of himself: a monster. For the longest time while he pursued his dreams as a young man, he felt he had control of the idea of being a monster, and that dream remains yet buried under layers of guilt and then unleashed in pure chaos as the monstrosity that he was twisted into. He explicitly had dreams of a free Zaun that have been deeply suppressed due to the death of his humanity, but the idea of that dream remains.
Dreams unfulfilled do to losses and opportunities to live again would draw Vander into Sleep's realm. Where Vander goes, Warwick follows, haunting his steps with the knowledge that at his base, regardless of dreams, he can lose control at any moment and revert to a beast that can and will hurt and kill those close to him. A shared understanding between the two as they merge over the course Sleep's rigorous trails and tribulations will hopefully help Vander and Warwick make peace with the dream that they left behind in Zaun and perhaps build something anew.
Because in the end, Vander and Warwick wish to protect their children and those they are close to. It is the one aspect of themselves that they can agree upon, and the draw of tethers will expand that need between them to many others beyond their considered family. In that way, both Vander and Warwick will stand and fight in the dream, for a future dream where those they are close to may not need suffer. He is willing to sacrifice everything he is for that to happen.
2. Somnia is a slow unraveling—of worlds, and of selves. How does your character respond to fear, transformation, and losing control? Do they fight, adapt, collapse?
For the purpose for Somnia, the Vander / Warwick duality will be primary to the fragmentation and merging of selves. After all, Vander's world has already completely unraveled multiple times, but it his need to come to terms with the unraveling of his self as well as self-acceptance of what he was turned into which will be his greatest struggle. The transformation has already been the worst part, so the long road to self acceptance and self control within an unraveling shifting world.
Vander - While he was urged into action to try to save his daughter, he remains a level-headed, social individual who is not always inclined to resort to violence unless provocated. He can be pushed socially, even physically, at times, but when those important to him are threatened, he shows up. The fear of losing is an undercurrent that both pacifies him and provokes him to action, having suffered considerable losses of those close him. Those scars remain the previous unraveling of his world, aspects of failings that haunt him and leave him attempting some control of the world and the people that he is close to.
Warwick - Regardless of the situation, Warwick will fight. The beast doesn't seek control, only dominance and blood. He has been unraveled to much of his base instincts, and even with Viktor's interventions, he is capable of extreme potent violence at will. For him, the duality has less meaning but no less impact, as the Vander part brings an order inside of the instinctual bloodlust and directs it, allowing a certain self-control. In an unraveling dreamscape and self, Warwick will revert to base instincts of the beast, including bloodlust, crippling violence, and a lack of self-control especially when enduring physical, emotional or mental attacks.
The end point is that as their worlds and themselves unravel, they will reach a greater understanding and acceptance of each other. It will only come when both of them have hit a sense of rock bottom. From there, they can try to build up from the basis of each other, merging and learning when order and when chaos is necessary.
3. Connection is the only constant. What kind of bonds does your character form— fast and burning, slow and wary, deep and desperate? How might that shape their time in this world?
Regardless of the duality within Vander, he carries within him a recklessness at this point to hide and avoid the deep discomfort, grief and pain of the end of his lives. After the loss of Mylo & Claggor, then his own life, then the years of experimentation have built a man and beast who will utilize self-destructive risk-taking as he navigates his own emotional state (or avoid it).
Due to this, Vander will likely form fast and burning bonds and those that head into deep and desperate. While he may shy from the the idea of exposing himself, his self-destructive antics as both Vander & Warwick, there is a drive for connection to feel a part of something, to burn hot and overwhelm those he bonds with so that he could help them while working to hiding aspects of himself.
4. What are two major forces in your character’s personality that are often in conflict? (Ex: logic vs emotion, power vs guilt, obedience vs rage, etc.)
Logic vs Emotion
Vander has previously weaponized his temper and anger until his emotions went out of control and he ended up nearly killing Silco. The trauma of that caused him to suppress his temper and become passive until the last moments of his purely human existence. In that moment, he took action, sought revenge and unleashed his latent potential again. In the dream world, he will have to contend with the reawakening during emotional moments, especially as the beast inside of him desires. His conflict between logic and emotion will literally physically manifest between his two forms and self-acceptance over time will allow him & Warwick to moderate each other.
VESSEL SELECTION
Which Vessel Type are you choosing: Token or Offering? Offering
Why does this Vessel type feel appropriate for your character? Due to unsanctioned and often cruel experimentation, Vander's original human body was fused with a two-headed murk wolf (an arcane runic symbol affected wolf). Even much of his original personality was suppressed by the bloodlust and instinctive hunting nature of the murk wolf, though he was slowly untangled and pulled to the surface by Viktor. He never was able to assume a human form again.
